Are You Passionate About Supporting the Next Generation of Leaders from the Dunbar Community?

Elbert Ziegler and Carl Burnside

About the Boys State Program:
The American Legion Boys State program is one of the most respected and selective educational programs for high school students in the U.S. It offers a participatory experience where students become part of local, county, and state government operations. At Boys State, participants learn franchised citizens’ rights, privileges, and responsibilities through hands-on training in the structure of city, county, and state governments, operated by students elected to various offices. The curriculum includes the law, court system, parliamentary procedure, and Florida political history.

At Florida Boys State, young citizens gain practical leadership experience by engaging in the political process through role-play civic exercises, running for office just as real candidates do.

To be eligible, candidates must:

• Be a junior in a Florida high school (public, private, or homeschooled)
• Have at least one semester of high school remaining
• Not have previously attended Boys State
• Have parental or guardian permission to attend

Buchanon and ZieglerHelp send our boys from Dunbar to Boys State where they will gain valuable leadership skills and learn about the importance of civic engagement. Our goal is to have the community sponsor eight boys from Dunbar at a cost of $600 per student.

Donations can be made by check payable to American Legion Post 192, with “Boys State Program” noted in the memo line, and mailed to 3190 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Alternatively, reach me by email at LegionPost192@gmail.com or you can call (239) 313-3700 and the Post Boys State Chairman (E.Z.) will visit your location to receive your check.
