For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Cassius Borel and I’ve lived, with my wife and two sons, in Lee County since 2004, and I have been practicing law in the 20th Judicial Circuit for over 20 years.
As you may or may not know, I was recently considered for an appointment to the Circuit Court bench here in the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida. I was fortunate enough to be one of the candidates whose name went up to the Governor for consideration and received an invite for an in-person interview in Tallahassee. Although I didn’t achieve my goal, this time, it was a tremendous professional honor to be considered by the Twentieth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission, Mr. Ryan Newman who is the Governor’s General Counsel, Mr. Newman’s staff and finally, by Governor Ron Desantis.
I aspire to become a judge, because it will allow me to serve the citizens of the 20th Judicial Circuit in a different capacity.
I served as an Assistant State Attorney in Fort Myers and briefly as an Assistant United States Attorney in San Antonio Texas. Outside of my work as a government lawyer, I have worked to help my clients in various legal matters having represented individuals, companies and even governmental entities. I got into the practice of law to help people, and I really enjoy being able to do that as an attorney. I am hopeful for the opportunity to serve my community in a different capacity.
I am passionate about fairness, justice and the rule of law. I feel that I have great analytical skills which would allow me to listen carefully to both sides, analyze the issues and consider both sides before coming to a well-reasoned impartial and fair decision. I also believe that with my temperament, all parties before me would be treated professionally. For these reasons, although I did not get the most recent appointment, I will continue in my pursuit of becoming a judge.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my family, friends, colleagues and all those who have assisted and continue to assist me in my judicial pursuit. Additionally, I’d like to express a great thanks to our great Governor, Governor Ron Desantis and his General Counsel, Ryan Newman, as well as their respective staffs for considering my application and taking the time to interview me for the position.
I would also like to thank the Twentieth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission, for their time in reviewing my application. It is a wonderful and humbling experience to have a group of your peers deem you worthy of consideration for a position as a judge, and I am very appreciative and grateful to all of the members of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission for thinking enough of me to send my name up to the Governor for consideration.
Additionally, I would like to thank those locally that have supported me in my endeavor to become a judge. I have received an overwhelming amount of support from attorneys, co-workers, friends, current judges and from people not involved in the legal field. I am appreciative of all the support.
Once again, thank you to all who have supported me in this continued journey, including the Chronicle, for providing me with this platform to express my appreciation. Just as I am committed to justice and fairness, I am committed to continuing to learn and grow in our community and in the law, and I hope that one day (hopefully soon), I will be able to write a letter of appreciation announcing that I am so proud to join the wonderful group of jurists that we are blessed to have in Florida’s Twentieth Judicial Circuit.
Again, Thank You all so very much!
