Meaningful, Driven and Purpose are the words used to describe my gratitude of having the honor to host and speak at the Basic Learning Skills Learning Center Re-Launch under the helm of Sharetha Davis, of Roses From The Concrete, for such an IMPORTANT cause!!
BLSLC founded in 2007 by the late Pioneer Mr. Roy Kennix and his lovely wife the Acclaimed Mrs. Frankie Jennings-Kennix.
Basic Learning Skills Learning Center is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization based right here in the Dunbar community and is a leading provider of free tutoring for students in grades VPK-12 who are struggling with reading and math. Since its establishment in 2007, BLSLC has transformed the educational pathway of well over 14,000 students and growing exponentially.
After meeting with Mrs Frankie Jennings-Kennix, seeing her dedication and sheer authentic passion for this initiative, immediately it became apparent to me that God had given me the task of assisting in driving this powerful message for the children in our community. Why? It is my belief that “If we fail to support the students in our community, we have failed as a community!”
Over a few weeks, preparing for the Re-Launch, I read a lot of history in articles, magazines, bios that Mrs Frankie entrusted with me from her personal safe keeps. I thought I was preparing to host this event but instead it brought clarity and light on my town, my community and my own mission.
Someone said to me “you can’t put a light under a lamp shade and not expect it to shine”.
That is my exact thoughts about shedding light on a program that fosters an environment for academic growth and holistic support in our community, for the future of our community.
My hats off to you Mrs. Frankie Jennings-Kennix for even now, your continued dedication for the students of Dunbar and for the Dunbar Community is proven to be unwavering.
If there’s one thing I take away from this entire experience is that we can NEVER stop working for the benefit of us.
And please understand that the assignment is Basic Learning Skills Learning Center CAN NOT DO IT WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY.
